Get More Exposure on Popular Social Bookmarking Services - Almost Instantly!

September 26th, 2008 | Posted in Social Marketing | No Comments

Social networking is not only popular, it’s a great way to connect with your readers, buyers and other people who share your interests.

But these days, web 2.0 services like Digg, del.icio.us, StumbleUpon and other bookmarking sites are full of cut-throat competition - all vying for a spot at the top.

With that in mind, how do you make your own site stand out?  The key is to make it as easy as possible for social networking users to browse your site and nominate your posts for extra exposure.

1. Promote Quality Not Quantity - It’s not about how many posts you’ve submitted, but rather the quality of those posts.

Don’t think for a minute that you can get away with writing a low-grade, keyword-stuffed article that’s purely designed to get backlinks to your site.  Social bookmarking means everybody sees it and rates it.  Submitting to hundreds of social bookmarking sites also won’t generate any extra promotion for your site - at least not for long.

2. Make it Relevant - Write good, thorough, quality blog posts and submit them only to the most relevant social bookmarking sites.

For example - If you’re reviewing the latest indie artist CD, you’ll definitely want to submit your post through MySpace.com which hosts several independent artists and bands.  If you’re writing an internet marketing piece, it will likely gain popularity on Sphinn.  Breaking news gets devoured by Technorati.

You can find social bookmarking sites for just about any subject out there.  Here is a list of 83 of them, sorted by category.

3. Don’t Forget the Buttons - Often when people are finished reading your post, they’ll look around to see where to go next.  Usually this means checking out related posts, signing up for a newsletter or, in the case of social bookmarking, adding the site to their favorite bookmark sharing service.

Make it easy for people to promote you by adding links in the footer for the different services your visitors would likely use.  Digg, StumbleUpon and Del.icio.us are the most popular but you may also want to include some of the more subject-specific bookmarking sites as well.  Good luck!
