What Do You Do When Your Email Marketing Open Rate is 99%?

May 15th, 2008 | Posted in Email Marketing | No Comments

An astounding 99% open rate from an email marketing campaign?  It seems hard to believe, doesn’t it?  But the truth is, nearly everyone who starts an opt-in email marketing campaign can reach near this record number.  Yet most people who get such a high open rate don’t even realize it until it’s gone.  How can you make sure you don’t let this key marketing opportunity pass you by?

The answer lies in your “Welcome” email.

Welcome emails are one of the first messages to be sent out - and yet they’re also one of the most overlooked, poorly managed messages you’ll have in your subscription arsenal.  Yet these messages have the potential to give you an open rate that’s above and beyond your regular newsletter.

So how do you use this to your marketing advantage?  Following these important email marketing tips to make your welcome message shine:

  1. Let your subscribers know what to expect - Your opt-in form probably only consists of a few sentences, a special offer and a couple of form fields for your user’s name and email address.  That makes your welcome email a prime opportunity to share a little about what they can expect to receive from you in the coming messages.

You don’t need to go into amazing detail - keep it brief and to-the-point.  Link to a web page with more details - and possibly even a sample newsletter, if you need more room to explain the benefits.

  2. Give them something immediately - People are always questioning whether or not they made the right decision by choosing to sign up for a newsletter - so give them something that rewards their confidence in you and your newsletter.  It could be a coupon, a sample or a free report.  If it’s an unadvertised bonus or a free gift - so much the better.
  3. Get them to come back to your website - Getting your visitors to give up their name and email address to sign up for your newsletter was just the first step in establishing a healthy and profitable reader-author relationship.  Now, you have to continue the cycle by leading your reader back to your web page from within your welcome letter.

One example of this would be to create a subscriber-only area where newsletter readers could be the first to learn of new product launches, bonuses or special sales.  This kind of exclusivity helps further validate their decision to sign up to your newsletter - so make it worth it!

Remember, the welcome email is one of the most-read yet often the most underserved message you send out.  Give it the attention it deserves and your visitors will likely give your newsletter the attention it deserves as well!
