If you’ve taken all the steps to get your business promotions running on pay-per-click services like Google Adwords and Yahoo Search Marketing – chances are you may not be seeing the kind of response you’d hoped for.
Instead of dumping your hard-earned money right into the search engines laps, you can build individual pages around each one of your targeted keyword groups and direct search engine traffic to them. This kind of narrow focus page is called a Landing Page since it’s where your visitor lands after they click on your ad.
But as easy as it is to create these simple little pages – it’s also easy to lose your visitors if they aren’t done the right way. So what do you need to know to make sure that visitor stays – and more importantly – buys from you?
1. Clear out all the clutter – That means removing any unnecessary site navigation, unnecessary graphics, ads, anything that would distract your visitor from buying.
You might think that removing all the “stuff” from your site is contrary to getting that visitor to buy. “What if they want to know more about us?” you might ask, “Or what if they came to buy athletic shoes, and decide they want to check out our sports equipment section too?”
Those are all valid questions – but ask yourself this as well…
“What if they didn’t?”
Or perhaps they might be interested – just not yet. What a well-built landing page should do is give that visitor exactly what they wanted when they clicked on your ad. Everything else is secondary. If they want to know more, and they buy from you, you can always follow up with related items via your mailing list.
2. Boost your Search Engine Optimization – The whole goal of search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN is to bring their own visitors relevant results. When you tie your ad in with your landing page, make sure that page includes the same keyword phrase you used in your original ad.
For example, if your ad reads “Lose weight, safely and naturally” – you want to make sure your landing page includes that same text in your headline, in your site URL (i.e. www.example.com/loseweightsafely) and in your call-to-action link or button that gets the reader from the landing page to your order page — “Click here to lose weight safely and naturally!”
3. Select graphics that reinforce your message – It’s absolutely fine and encouraged to include a few graphics to spruce up your landing page. But make sure they’re the right kind of graphics. By that I mean, include images that have to do precisely with what your visitor is searching for.
Going back to the weight loss example, you could show a testimonial (and a before and after photo) of someone who successfully lost weight with the product you’re promoting. Testimonials make great additions to your landing page!
By keeping these tips in mind when you create a landing page, you’ll not only see your sales increase, but you’ll also get more targeted ad conversions in your pay per click campaigns as well – without spending more of your own money!
