So you’ve got a good stream of visitors coming to your web pages – but maybe the sales aren’t as high as you’d like them to be. What can you do? Here are five proven, simple ways to help convert visitors into buyers.
1. Tell them how to order – This might seem like a no-brainer, but oftentimes, visitors come to your site, are interested in your product, and don’t know how (or where) to buy or checkout.
If someone has to click a link or a button to checkout – tell them so. You’d be surprised how many people don’t ultimately complete an order because they don’t know how.
2. Start with the most expensive option – This sounds like the worst advice anyone could give, but when you promote the most expensive offer or product first – then work your way back down to the more affordable one, many customers will breathe a sigh of relief that the product is indeed within their budget.
As an added bonus, you might even sell a few of those higher-priced versions!
The Wall Street Journal has a terrific article on buyer psychology that demonstrates how this works with The Psychology of the $14,000 Handbag
3. Give or include something free – Everyone loves free stuff and if they know they can get it from you, they’ll be more likely to complete their order at your site.
If someone buys a product from you, consider bundling a low-cost accessory to help them get more out of their purchase. If it’s a digital item, such as a software product, include free updates for one year.
Even something as common as free shipping works well to convert casual browsers into buyers. Just be sure to factor the cost of shipping into your product so you don’t lose money!
4. Upsell wherever possible – Upselling is recommending additional products that tie in well with what the customer originally wanted.
You’ll commonly see upselling at work on sites like Amazon.com, where they share the “Customers who liked X also liked Y” information – and proceed to tell you what other customers bought.
5. Offer limited-time specials – If a buyer knows you always charge the same price for an item, they’ll put off buying it until another time (or possibly never!)
That’s why, from time to time it’s a good idea to offer limited-time specials or include a sense of urgency in your sales letter.
If the special price expires at midnight tomorrow though, make sure to live up to your word and end the price at that time – otherwise the customers who “got in” before the deal expired won’t be happy that it was extended indefinitely!
If you follow these five easy ways to help turn visitors into buyers, you’re almost certain to see your sales increase as a result. Good luck!
