I can’t fault people for wanting to make money online. Really, with the stress of the economy and the uncertainty of looming job loss – I don’t blame people for looking to the Internet to earn some extra cash.
The problem is, they seem to be hearing about it from somebody who’s nephew’s friend bought a $7 e-book on “How to Make Money Online” and trust that as the way to go. And I’m sure you know just what kind of “information” they’re getting too. One of them is the idea that there’s a magical “sales letter formula” that will hypnotize your readers into throwing wads of cash at you while you sleep. Another one is the massive, bright red ORDER NOW button.
Now, there’s nothing WRONG with that big red button (in fact, according to Marketing Sherpa’s Landing Page Handbook, if having a prominent, red button is what it takes to get people to subscribe or take action — DO IT!), but there is something very wrong with the way most buttons are presented.
For one thing, very few “sales letter websites” give the reader any inkling of what will happen after the order. This is the number one concern of every potential customer. No matter how great your offer – if you don’t explain what happens once the order is placed, you leave an unanswered question in the customer’s mind – and a reason to abandon the order.
Some other questions might be:
• Where will I go once my order is complete?
• How do I know my order is secure?
• How soon will I get my product? How will it arrive? (if its digital, how soon can I download it? How soon will my membership be approved?)
• Do I have to take any other action after my order is complete? (Should I check my email and click a link to subscribe to updates?)
When reading your sales copy, remember that customers aren’t looking for reasons why they should buy, but rather reasons why they shouldn’t buy. They’ll jump at any reason they can find to ultimately not buy. Plunking down an order button without an explanation is one of those reasons. Make sure you fully walk them through the entire process – even if YOU think it’s simple! You’ll be surprised to see just how much your orders improve as a result!
