How Do I Update Old Links on My Website?

It happens – especially after a website redesign or a new content management system.  Pages move, old pages disappear and new pages crop up in their place.  Unfortunately, other website owners linking to you, and the search engines, may not be as quick to update as you are.  What do you do?

The good news is, you don’t have to risk losing all those hard-earned visitors.  The easiest way to make sure they don’t end up on a “Not Found” page is to add a “Meta Refresh” to the outdated page.  A Meta Refresh is a way of telling the user’s browser (or the search engine) that your page has moved – and it automatically directs them there.

To add a meta refresh, open up your outdated page in your favorite HTML Editor (or you can use Windows Notepad), and add the following piece of code in between the tags <head> and </head>.

<meta http-equiv=”Refresh” content=”0;URL=http://www.example.com/”>

The “0″ after content is the length of time you want the browser to wait before redirecting someone.  In this case, the 0 tells the browser not to wait at all and go straight to the new page.

All you need to do now is add your new page URL after the www in the example above.  Do this with each outdated/changed page that you want to redirect visitors from, and they’ll automatically go there without any extra work on your part.

If your old links are appearing in the search engine, having a meta refresh will not only point the search engine to the new place, but in time, it will drop the outdated URL from its search results without you having to do anything.
