If you run a blog, chances are you’ll come face to face with Blogger’s Block several times. You know you have to write, but sitting down and staring at a blank document makes you wish you were doing anything but writing.
Fortunately, there are ways to overcome Blogger’s Block, and its partner-in-crime, procrastination. Here’s the exact method I use to banish the block and write a great blog post in record time, even when I don’t feel particularly inspired or motivated.
1. Imagine you’re talking to a friend – That means you have to resist the urge to look up words or fact-check in Wikipedia or Google for the moment.
Remember, blog posts aren’t going to be graded by your English literature teacher, so you can take some liberties on writing more freely and expressively in your blog. Don’t worry about spell-checking or looking up the correct punctuation yet either. The goal is to get the idea on paper – then refine when you’re done.
2. Tell a story by putting together two completely different ideas. Inspiration from this can come from the strangest of places.
For example, what do great writing and diamonds have in common?
Nothing?
Here’s a post by Sonia Simone on Copyblogger that reveals how to get “sparkling results” from your content. It goes into detail on clarity, cut, carats – all facets of diamonds that apply to writing great content too.
You can even think of something random or fun, and try to work it in to your blog topic. Don’t bang your head trying to make things fit. Just write what comes to mind and then go back and edit it later.
3. Write by Numbers – This is a good way to write a quick article or blog post when you’re absolutely drained of creativity. Pick a number between 1 and 10. Now use that number to write some bulleted points that your visitors can read over and absorb quickly. For example:
• 5 Ways to Get a Higher Search Engine Ranking
• 7 Easy Steps to Growing Beautiful Orchids
• 3 Surefire Appetizers to Fix for Your Next Party
Once you get this kind of headline done, it’s easy to follow up with writing each point.
In the end, if you’re still not feeling the inspiration hit you – don’t force yourself. Take a break and come back to it later. Who knows, while you were taking a break, you might have seen or heard something that could become a great blog post! Try it – it really works!

Love the idea of numbers; always stretches my thinking. Thanks for the insights.
