Creating audio for your website can be easier said than done. The web is full of low-quality, scratchy-sounding audio that can make even the best quality product fall flat.
So how do you create your own website audio without falling victim to the most common pitfalls and mistakes? Here’s how to create web audio affordably and easily.
1. Make sure you have the right equipment. Invest in a good quality microphone, a speaker headset (to help you hear the recording more clearly) and a good soundcard for your computer. You don’t need the priciest components if you’ll only be recording a few audio greetings or demos.
The most important piece of equipment will be your microphone, as the better ones block out more background noise and record clearer, crisper voice.
2. Get the right software tools. Much of today’s audio editing software is expensive and targeted to the professionals. Fortunately, you can have a complete audio recording and editing package for a lot less than commercial-grade packages.
Look into Total Web Audio for an easy way to make your own audio recordings. A one-time fee will let you make as many recordings as you want, and optimize them for web streaming so that your visitors can download them almost instantly.
3. Barricade yourself in your office. Okay, so it sounds a little extreme – but there’s nothing more irritating to your listeners than the rattling air conditioner or the blabbing TV noise in the background.
Find a quiet time to record your audio without distractions and minimize as much noise as you can. Top audio editing packages and a good microphone can help minimize this noise as well.
Once you’ve got all the right tools, it’s time to create your first recording. Remember to speak slower and more clearly than usual (we have a tendency to speak quickly to “get it over with” when recording!).
Above all, don’t let the first try discourage you. Give it a few more tries and listen to yourself as a first time website visitor might hear you. Make sure your enthusiasm for your business or product comes through in your recording too. Nothing sounds worse than a monotone voice reading off of index cards. Share the excitement and your visitors will naturally become more attentive to what you have to say.
